Winemaker

Made on a small Alsace estate β€” Pinot Gris on mosaic of granite, limestone, schist and sandstone. Anonymous by design: the trade name is revealed on commitment, after the samples and the data have done the talking.

The history.

Alsace has made wine far longer than any of us. We farm a small parcel of it, by hand, the way it was taught to us β€” dry, sunny continental in the rain shadow of the vosges.

What this vintage is showing so far.

β€œEven budburst across the blocks. I'm not relaxed yet, but the season is shaping up honestly.”

β€” the winemaker, updated this month

Philosophy.

Less, but better. Mosaic of granite, limestone, schist and sandstone grows fruit with its own grip, so I extract gently and stay out of the way. No additions I can avoid, no oak that talks over the place.

Late, even budburst β€” the cold hung on at 200–400 m and kept the vines asleep an extra week. I don't mind; slow starts tend to finish right.

Finished pruning the home block today. My hands are reminding me how many cuts that is. The oldest vines on mosaic of granite, limestone, schist and sandstone get pruned last, by me, every year.

Reservoir check came back lower than I'd like. We'll dry-farm the old vines and water only the young ones. Less wine, but the right wine.
