Lukas is the sixth generation at Hof Weinbach. He farms 4.5 hectares of Riesling on blue slate terraces along the Middle Mosel. He studied at Geisenheim and came back in 2018.

The history.

Six generations on the same slope. The Fuder cellar my great-great-grandfather dug into the hillside still holds 28°F cooler than outside in summer. The oldest vines on the estate are 94 years old and ungrafted.

What this vintage is showing so far.

Steep slopes, blue slate, cold nights. Bud break is on time. I'm watching the Prälat parcel — the south-facing aspect ripens fast and I want to hold acid this year.

Philosophy.

Spontaneous fermentation, long lees contact, Fuder casks for the GG wines. I don't add acid and I don't de-acidify. The slate gives me what I need.
