2023 vintage
Casa Brunello
Montalcino, Italy Β· Winemaker: Alessandra Moretti Β· 36 members
What happened
The vintage, in five moments.
- Hail on June 6 took out most of the upper parcel β Alessandra lost about 20% of projected yield in fifteen minutes.
- Long, dry August. Picked on October 2, a full week later than 2022.
- Fermentation on native yeast ran 22 days β the longest Alessandra had managed in cement.
- Spent 26 months in Slavonian botti grandi before bottling June 2026.
- Released as Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2023 in January 2027 β the Crew got their allocation eight weeks before retail.
The final wine
What we bottled.
The 2023 Brunello is a taut, savory wine β dried herb, sour cherry, a dark mineral note from the marine clay. Alessandra calls it a wine for patient drinkers. The Crew allocation arrived at Vintner (six bottles), Cellarmaster (twelve), and Vineyard Partner (twenty-four) levels, all with personal notes from Alessandra attributing the vintage to the Crew on the back label.

From the Crew
βWhen the hail hit, Alessandra posted a photo of the ground before she said a word. Just the leaves. I sat with that photo for a long time. I'd never thought about a year of weather being something I could lose.β
